Creative Non-Cake Ideas
A wedding cake is fairly traditional - but you're not. What's a bride to do? Don't have a cake! Here are a few ideas for your wedding sans the traditional wedding cake. These ideas will not only be unique, but they will be affordable and something you can create on your own.

  • Cupcakes - Okay, so this is still cake, but it's mini cake! With cupcakes you can have more than one kind, various frosting types and cute little individual decorations for each cupcake. Cupcakes are also easier to serve and may be a cheaper alternative to a wedding cake. Doing a simple search on Google or Yahoo will yield a ton of ideas for wedding cupcakes.
  • Snack Cakes - This is in the same vein as cupcakes, but with a variety of snack cakes. Get twinkies, Little Debbie snacks, Tastykakes or your other favorite snack cake. These can be displayed in a similiar manner to the cupcake, on tiered trays or arranged like a cake. Let your guests take away what they like. See: The Twinkie Wedding Cake or The Ding Dong Wedding Cake
  • Donuts - These are a tasty treat for anyone! Check out your local bakery and see if they can dip/sprinkle/decorate your donuts in the same colors as your wedding and you're set to go. Again, tiered tray may be the best way to display these simple delights. See: The Krispy Kreme Donut Wedding Cake

Create Your Own Chocolate Favors
Are you considering have some kind of candy to give away as your favors for your wedding? Here are a few ideas for you to consider. One is to buy chocolate bars or mini chocolate bars and redecorate the wrappers with your own design. There are companies out there that will do this for you, but why not do it yourself? Get some cardstock (available at craft or scrapbook stores) in your wedding colors and either use stickers, stamps, or lettering to doll them up.

Another good idea is to make mold your own chocolate favors. At the craft store (and even online or on eBay) you can find various types of molds, such as hearts or roses. They also sell melting chocolate (white and dark) and you can add your own extra flavorings, such as mint, raspberry or vanilla. Simply follow the instructions on the melting packages, pour your chocolate into the molds, and let them set. Use pretty bags (like organza bags) or little boxes to hold the chocolates.

Signature Drinks
A great little creative flair you can add to your wedding is to have a signature drink available for your guests to sip on during cocktail hour or throughout the evening of your reception. It's easier to plan out a signature drink to go with any theme you might be having for your wedding, but even if your wedding is theme-free then pick out a cocktail or mixed drink that you really love and give it a creative name. The name can be something catchy and unqiue that best descibes you as a couple or even something as simple as incorporating your favorite colors or your honeymoon destination. Let your bartenders/caterers know ahead of time about your signature drink and be sure they know how to make it. Make a display card next to all of the bars with a sign about the signature drink, what the recipe/ingredients are, and maybe even the inspiration behind the name of the drink.

Hands-on Dessert Ideas
Another fun idea for your wedding reception would be to have some "hands-on" desserts available for your guests to munch on, such as fondue pots filled with different kinds of melted chocolates paired with trays of fruits and cake pieces (or a chocolate foundation to dip treats into).

If you're feeling a little bold and think your guests might be up for it, set up some make your own smores stations with smores maker kits, completed with all the fixings and marshmellow holders for your guests who decide to take up your offer.

Other ideas could include a cupcake or cookies decorating station or make your own sundaes.

Cake Table Display

Your wedding cake - not only will it be a delicious dessert for you and your guests, but it also partially serves as a decoration at your reception. Your cake is usually a reflection of you and your spouse-to-be's taste, so it should rightly be displayed in a prominent location at your reception on its own display table. Here are a few simple tips on how to give your cake display table a little spice.

  • White table cloths and skirts are usually used for the cake display table, but you could always use a table cloth that match the colors for your wedding, then go for it!
  • Drape other pretty fabrics (such as tulle or lace) or organza ribbons around the table.
  • Use greenery around the edge to liven up the table.
  • Scatter petals around the table top.
  • Add tea light candles near the cake and display table. Or, use white Christmas lights to go underneath or around the edge of the table.
  • Use things from your wedding to decorate the cake display table - put out your toasting glasses, your cake server, or even your bridesmaids' bouquets in little vases near the cake.
