Unfolding in the historic gold-mining town east of San Diego, the three-decade old Julian Bluegrass Festival -- California's oldest -- features banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and guitar contests, workshops, food, and fun.
The 36th annual Julian Bluegrass Festival & Banjo / Fiddle Contest will be held Saturday, September 16 - from 9 until 6 and Sunday, September 17, from 9 until 4. The event is held at Frank Lane Park, 2645 Farmers Road., Julian, CA 92036.

The Adams Avenue Street Fair, Southern California's largest FREE two-day music festival, will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Saturday, September 23, 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Sunday, September 24, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, along Adams Avenue from 32nd Street on the West to 35th Street on the East and one block south on Mansfield Street in the Normal Heights community of San Diego.
The Adams Avenue Street Fair will include more than 70 musical acts performing on six stages spread out over an eight-block area. Visitors will enjoy a variety of music, including blues, rock, world, alt, roots-rock, jazz, reggae, zydeco, alt-country and acoustic. In addition to the electric and eclectic music, there will be three beer gardens, giant carnival rides, family activities, and more than 300 food, arts, craft vendors selling their specialties throughout the Street Fair venue.

San Diego has a number of different Farmers Market venues throughout the week, offering fresh produce, beautiful seasonal flowers, local foods, crafts and products from local artisans and retailers. Visiting a local farmer's market is free as well, except of course for anything you purchase! There are a number of markets throughout town, depending on the day of the week, from Tuesday until Sunday.

Hear the sweet sounds of train songs and the steam train whistles during the Train Song Festival at Old Poway Park in Poway, CA (in San Diego's North County) on Saturday, October 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Traditional railroad music that is inspired by the history and culture surrounding railroads will be featured. There will be train-related vendors, model railroad displays, craft displays, mock train robberies and a free children's craft area. The Poway Midland Railroad Volunteers will provide rides aboard the park's 1907 restored steam train for a nominal fee. There will be a full line-up of live entertainment. Every year during the month of October, Chef Celebration holds a series of dinners featuring teams of award-winning local chefs who donate their time and talents to raise funds for an annual scholarship program.

The Holiday of Lights at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is a spectacular drive-through light show and exhibit, themed for the holiday season, with more than 350 crowd-pleasing, family-oriented displays. "Held the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m., the Sky Tonight shows cover the sky in San Diego as it appears on the night of the planetarium show as well as some additional information on a particular astronomy topic. For an updated listing of the topic, please call (619) 238-1233 and choose menu options 4, then 1, then 1 again. Tickets to the planetarium show are first-come, first-served. It is recommended that all others arrive at the Science Center by 6:30 p.m. to purchase tickets. Sky Tonight tickets include a visit to the Exhibit Galleries."

As a public service to San Diego, most of the Park's museums and galleries offer free admission on Tuesdays every month. They are on a rotating basis and different museums are free each Tuesday of the month. Free admission is usually only towards the museum's permanent collection. The special collections will often cost extra. This is a great opportunity to visit Balboa Park and visit a few of the museums for free in the process. California's largest urban music festival, Street Scene, is the ultimate San Diego end-of-summer celebration. Originally located in the Gaslamp Quarter of Downtown San Diego, the festival has now moved to Coors Ampitheater in Chula Vista, CA, just south of San Diego.
This two day festival takes place from September 22-23. It will feature a comedy stage, vaudeville performance acts and interactive festival processions in addition to the customary arts and crafts booths and a wide variety of food and beverages.

Up in the Pala Region there's an operating gem mine open to the public
for tours and digging for gems in the Oceanview Mine. The meeting
place for the tour is the Pala Casino at 11154 Highway 76 in Pala.
You get to explore the mine, take a tour and dig for gems. The
Oceanview Mine produces some of the the world's finest natural pink
tourmaline and beryl ever found in North America. Advance reservations

Adventure Rib Rides offers exhilarating rides on an authentic Navy SEAL Rigid Inflatable Boat. The RIB's low profile provides for an intimate on-the-water experience, allowing passengers to get up close to the historical sights and the diverse marine environment that San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean have to offer.
There are three types of tours available. These include a three-hour Eco-Tour to the Coronado Islands, Mexico on Sunday mornings; two-hour Naval Heritage & Maritime History Tour of San Diego Bay on Wednesday mornings; and a two-hour Sunset Bay Tour on Friday evenings.

All aboard for a one-hour, historic train ride through rugged back country. The train departs from Campo Depot and takes a 12-mile round trip ride to the International Tunnel and back. Train personnel - all volunteers with a passion - are dressed in period costume and love to answer questions or just share the history of the railway.
After the ride, take a guided tour of the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum which houses steam and diesel locomotives, freight equipment, passenger cars, cabooses and a railway post office car.

Go on a behind the scenes tour of Petco Park and see all the things you've wanted to see, such as the press box, the Padres dugout, and the bullpen. You'll be able to learn about the park's history and the Western Metal Supply Co. building and more. Walk-up tours are offered Tuesday through Sunday for groups of 25 or smaller. Private tours and groups 25 or larger require reservations. Tickets are $9 for adults, $6 for seniors, $5 for children 12 and under and $8 for active military. Tour hotline is (619) 795-5011.

Every year, we turn our clocks back to the days of San Diego's stagecoaches, gunslingers and sarsaparilla. Expect an Old West show, an archaeological dig, hay wagon rides, historical puppet shows, costume contests, Western-style music, and eating contests! Also included are historical and educational displays and demos. Stop by the Marble Slab Creamery booth for a free kid's size scoop of ice cream. The event takes place on Fourth between Market and J Street, and Island between 4th and 5th Avenues. The main gate is on 5th and Island. Information: 619.233.5008 and 619.233.4692. The market features over 30 independent vendors each week. Fresh, locally grown seasonal and organic produce will be sold, along with San Diego County grown flowers, handmade arts and crafts, and a large selection of prepared gourmet foods. Live music will also provide atmosphere and entertainment to this long awaited weekly event.
